Security forces in Balochistan have foiled a major cross-border terrorist plot, arresting five Afghan nationals in Ziarat district and seizing a substantial cache of weapons and explosives, officials said on Monday. The operation highlights continuing security threats posed by militants entering Pakistan from Afghanistan.
According to the district administration, the joint raid by Levies personnel and local authorities at Asperah Raghla checkpost was based on actionable intelligence regarding planned terror activities in Balochistan. The arrested militants are reportedly residents of Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
Deputy Commissioner Ziarat said the militants were preparing a “significant act of terrorism,” which was prevented thanks to timely information and a coordinated response.
A substantial cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the suspects, including 11 hand grenades, three submachine guns, two M4 rifles (in parts), two RPG rockets, a grenade launcher, 15 SMG grenades, 9 M4 magazines, 14 SMG magazines, 420 SMG rounds, 230 M4 rounds, one kilogram of explosive material, and various communication devices, including six wireless sets and four mobile phones.
Officials also seized a Suzuki carry van, a motorcycle, 13 ammunition bags, 16 power cells, and literature associated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The suspects were taken into custody for interrogation, and further investigations are under way to determine their network, facilitators and intended targets.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti commended the district administration and Levies Force for what he termed a “successful and timely operation.”
“The sacrifices and prompt action of our security personnel continue to play an important role in safeguarding the people of Balochistan,” he said.
The chief minister added that the provincial government would continue to support law enforcement agencies in efforts to counter terrorism and maintain stability in the region.
