Renowned journalist Hamid Mir tweeted a claim that a woman named Zarina Marri, allegedly a teacher at the Government Middle School in Kahan, Kohlu, was arrested in 2005 along with her infant child and taken to a detention center in Karachi. According to Hamid Mir, her enforced disappearance has now spanned two decades.
This is not the first time this claim has surfaced. Hamid Mir had previously mentioned this incident in one of his newspaper columns. Hamid Mir’s allegations stem from the story of a man named Munir Mengal, who claimed that while he was detained in Malir Cantonment, he saw Zarina Marri there. Munir Mengal claims were first published in a magazine, authored by a journalist named Lawrence Lifschultz. This is from where Hamid Mir took up this fake news.
Basis of the Allegation and the Official Response
In response to these allegations, the Education Minister of Balochistan, Raheela Durrani, held a press conference. She stated that since Hamid Mir specifically mentioned the Government Middle School in Kahan, the Balochistan Education Department conducted a full investigation into the matter.
According to Minister Durrani:
• The official records show that no woman named Zarina Marri ever served as a teacher at that school or was employed by the Education Department in Kohlu.
• The only similar name found in official records is Zarina Nargis, and her service details and salary slips were presented as evidence.
• Taj Muhammad Marri, the principal of Government Model High School Kohlu, also issued a video statement confirming that no teacher by the name of Zarina Marri was ever appointed at the school.
Social Media Reaction
Following Hamid Mir’s tweet, a coordinated campaign emerged on social media attempting to link the case of Zarina Marri to enforced disappearances and the Balochistan Education Department. Provincial Sports Minister Meena Majeed labeled this campaign as “organized propaganda” and said that some individuals exploit such narratives for personal or political gain.

Views of Security Analysts
According to certain security analysts, individuals like Hamid Mir, Imaan Mazari, and some YouTubers have been leveraging the narrative of enforced disappearances to gain traction in Western media. They suggest this topic attracts attention and funding from bodies like the European Union, USAID, various NGOs, and digital platforms.
Key Questions Raised
This case raises several important questions:
1. Should a senior journalist make such serious allegations based solely on a single individual’s unverified testimony?
2. Was it not the journalist’s responsibility to first verify the information with the relevant authorities, especially the Education Department?
3. Are social media campaigns based on unverified claims not contributing to misinformation and social unrest?
While the claims concerning Zarina Marri are serious and sensitive, the evidence presented so far does not substantiate them. In such matters, it is essential to uphold responsible journalism, fact-checking, and consider official statements to ensure that the public receives accurate and balanced information.
