Tajikistan’s water to flow into Balochistan: President Zardari
PCI Conference

In a landmark development, Pakistan is set to receive water from Tajikistan to address the chronic water scarcity in Balochistan. The UAE government supported and successfully completed a feasibility study for the ambitious project, as announced by President Asif Ali Zardari. This initiative, he stated, could transform Balochistan into an agricultural hub, unlocking its vast potential for economic and social progress.

Speaking at the closing session of the International Conference on “Regional Connectivity and Pakistan: Emerging Opportunities” in Islamabad, Zardari highlighted the strategic importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He also emphasized the role of Gwadar Port in boosting regional trade and economic growth. Moreover, he also described Pakistan as a “natural trade corridor” linking China, Central Asia, and the Middle East. He emphasized the country’s potential to facilitate commerce and connectivity across the region.

Zardari elaborated on his vision, first proposed in 2023, to bring Tajikistan’s water to Balochistan. Under this plan, water flowing from China into the rivers of Gilgit-Baltistan would be channeled towards Balochistan. This would provide a sustainable solution to its long-standing water crisis. He stressed that Balochistan possessed more agricultural land than Punjab and Sindh combined, but its potential remained untapped due to a lack of water resources.

Zardari highlighted the fertility of Balochistan’s soil and explained that ‘Bhal’ is a local term for soil that flows downhill from the mountains. This soil solidifies upon settling, creating rich and productive farmland. With adequate water supply, the province could revolutionize its agricultural sector, producing high-quality cotton and other essential crops.

Furthermore, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti expressed his optimism about the project, calling Gwadar Port a beacon of hope for the people of the province. He emphasized that regional connectivity, combined with sustainable water supply, would bring employment and prosperity to the people of Balochistan.

Ahmed Jarwan Al Mohammed is the President of the UAE-based Global Council of Tolerance and Peace. He also lauded Pakistan’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity. He highlighted the importance of collective efforts, emphasizing that in order to promote tolerance, education, and business cooperation, collaboration and shared goals are essential.

With a two-year timeline set for the completion of this project, Zardari remained confident. He believed this initiative would address Balochistan’s water woes. He also emphasized that it would pave the way for greater agricultural productivity, economic stability, and regional cooperation. This historic venture lays the groundwork and, as a result, brings the dream closer to reality. Consequently, Balochistan is on its way to becoming a thriving agricultural and economic center..
