Who was Qari Amjad? Senior TTP commander Qari Amjad, also known as Mufti Muzahim, was killed in a Pakistan security operation near the Afghan border.
According to ISPR, troops intercepted militants attempting to cross into Pakistan late Wednesday night. Qari Amjad was one of the most influential leaders of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and had a Rs5 million bounty.
Qari Amjad was considered a powerful and influential commander of the TTP. He served as deputy to TTP chief Noor Wali Mehsud and headed the group’s central leadership council, known as the Rahbari Shura.
The United States designated him a global terrorist in December 2022, accusing him of overseeing TTP operations across Pakistan’s tribal belt and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Born in Lower Dir, Qari Amjad studied at a local seminary in Jandol before joining the Taliban movement during the 2007–08 militant surge. He played a key role in attacks in the Malakand region. After military operations intensified, he fled to Afghanistan in 2010, where he continued organising militant activity against Pakistan.
Why his killing matters
The killing of Qari Amjad is seen as a significant blow to the TTP, but questions remain about the group’s reach and continued ability to launch attacks. As Pakistan presses Afghanistan for action against militants, the death of Qari Amjad may influence future cross-border counter-terror policy.
