Three universities in Balochistan closed due to ‘security concerns’

Three universities in Balochistan have indefinitely halted on-campus learning, opting instead for virtual classes due to escalating security threats. The institutions affected include the University of Balochistan, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, and the University of Turbat.

The decision follows a series of violent incidents in the region, including the recent hijacking of the Jaffar Express near Sibi, where 26 individuals, including 18 security personnel, lost their lives. Multiple subsequent attacks across Balochistan have further heightened concerns.

According to the University of Balochistan’s administration, the move to online education was necessary as many students from remote areas faced difficulties reaching campuses due to ongoing protests and road blockades on national highways. Vice Chancellor Zahoor Ahmad Bazai emphasized that concessions would be made for students lacking access to stable internet connections. The university aims to resume on-campus classes once the current situation stabilizes, potentially after Eidul Fitr.

Similarly, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University issued a notification directing students to attend virtual classes throughout Ramadan. Meanwhile, the University of Turbat suspended its academic activities due to both security concerns and a student-led blockade of the university’s Administrative Block. The university’s statement highlighted the need to protect students and staff while ensuring campus facilities were secure. Students residing in on-campus hostels have been asked to vacate within two days.

The disruptions extend beyond these three universities. The Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences has suspended transport services for students and is set to decide on academic activities shortly, as examinations remain underway.

Amid growing unrest, university leaders stress the importance of providing quality education despite the volatile environment, aiming to return to normalcy as soon as possible.
