Renowned Pakistani artist and cultural leader Syed Jamal Shah was awarded the prestigious Chevalier (Knight) of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government for his outstanding contributions to arts and cultural promotion.

The award was conferred by French Ambassador Nicolas Gayle during a ceremony held at the French Residence on October 1, attended by diplomats, artists, colleagues, and cultural enthusiasts.

The Order of Arts and Letters, established in 1957 by the French Ministry of Culture, recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through artistic creation or by promoting arts and letters in France and globally. The Order has three ranks: Knight, Officer, and Commander.

During the ceremony, the French ambassador highlighted Shah’s 45-year-long career across multiple artforms, including sculpture, printmaking, painting, and acting, as well as his contributions to teaching and mentoring young artists at institutions like NCA and Hunerkada College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Born in Quetta, Balochistan, Shah’s artistic journey reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage. The French Ambassador praised his commitment to cultural resilience and transmission, from his leadership roles as DG of PNCA, Chairman of the Silk Road Culture Centre, to his tenure as Federal Minister of National Heritage and Culture, promoting Pakistan’s tourism, crafts, and folk arts.

Shah also recalled his formative years, noting how reading Jean-Paul Sartre’s works inspired him: “It was a struggle to read, but when I began to understand, I felt born again—ready to face life as a freer individual.”

M. Syed Jamal Shah was formally presented with the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on behalf of the French Minister of Culture, joining a distinguished group of artists and cultural leaders recognized globally for their contribution to arts and cultural exchange.
