Balochistan Home Secretary Hamza Shafqat briefing media after deadly suicide blast near Shahwani Stadium
Balochistan Secretary Hamza Shafqat addresses the media after the tragic suicide blast near Shahwani Stadium.

Balochistan’s Home Secretary Hamza Shafqat held a press conference following the devastating suicide blast on Sariab Road near Shahwani Stadium, which claimed at least 15 lives and injured 38 others.

Speaking to the media, Shafqat confirmed that the suicide bomber used approximately 8 kilograms of explosives. The attacker, believed to be under 30 years of age, targeted the location after a political gathering had ended. “The blast occurred at 9 PM, several hours after the BNP rally, which was scheduled for 3 PM,” he stated.

Attack Details
Hamza Shafqat clarified that the explosion took place approximately 500 meters away from the rally site, and not inside the rally itself. He emphasized that 120 police personnel had been deployed for the event and that intelligence had already warned of potential security threats, particularly in light of the upcoming 12th Rabi-ul-Awal observances.

Compensation and Government Response
The Balochistan government has announced compensation of Rs 1.5 million for each martyr’s family and Rs 500,000 for each injured person. “This is a painful time for us. The government stands with the families of the victims,” said Shafqat.

Investigation Underway
The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has registered a case against unidentified suspects under charges of murder, attempted murder, and anti-terrorism laws. The CTD has also recovered the remains of the suicide bomber and sent them for forensic analysis.

Security Measures Moving Forward
Due to heightened threats, the Home Secretary announced that no public gatherings or rallies will be allowed after Maghrib prayers going forward. “Political parties had already been warned of the sensitive security situation,” he added.

In a related development, Section 144 remains in effect across Balochistan, banning public gatherings to prevent further incidents.

Broader Context
While speaking on broader safety and disaster preparedness, Hamza Shafqat mentioned that flood warnings have been issued for Sibi and Naseerabad, and machinery has been deployed in vulnerable areas. He highlighted that unlike August 2024—when over 100 people lost their lives—no lives were lost during August 2025 in natural disasters.

The tragic incident on Sariab Road underscores the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region, even as authorities work to bolster security ahead of significant religious observances.
