Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House
Shehbaz Sharif set for first White House meeting of a Pakistani PM since 2019

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, marking the first official visit of a Pakistani premier to the presidential residence since Imran Khan’s meeting with Trump in 2019.

Unlike the last high-profile engagement, which was largely centered on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, this visit comes at a time when Washington appears to hold a genuine interest in strengthening bilateral ties, according to South Asia analyst Michael Kugelman.

The upcoming Trump–Sharif meeting follows a visible thaw in relations between Islamabad and Washington. In June, Trump hosted Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir for a rare one-on-one meeting at the White House — a move analysts say underscored the shift from the Biden administration’s frosty approach toward a more transactional but open style of engagement.

Officials on both sides say the meeting is part of a renewed push to reset ties, with regional security and counterterrorism cooperation expected to dominate the agenda. Observers also note that recent strains in US-India relations have created a window of opportunity for Pakistan to reposition itself as a valuable partner to Washington.

Sharif, who is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), will return the same day after his White House engagement to continue his diplomatic and multilateral meetings.
