A deadly traffic accident near the Reko Diq project site in Balochistan’s Chagai district has claimed the lives of at least 11 Afghan nationals, while six others were injured, officials confirmed.
According to Chagai Superintendent of Police Muhammad Sharif, the accident occurred near Nokundi when an oil tanker collided with a pickup vehicle traveling on the project site road. Due to the intensity of the crash, all 11 passengers in the pickup vehicle died at the scene.
Police said the injured were rushed for medical treatment, while authorities launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.
SP Muhammad Sharif stated that the deceased were Afghan citizens traveling through informal routes, attempting to reach Iran via Pakistan, with the ultimate aim of traveling onward to Europe.
He added that legal formalities are underway, after which the bodies will be handed over to Afghan authorities.
The incident once again draws attention to road safety risks on remote transit routes in Balochistan, particularly in areas frequently used for cross-border movement.
