Reko Diq mines to bring transformative benefits to Balochistan: Barrick CEO

The Reko Diq copper-gold project in Balochistan is being heralded as a transformative venture for the region, which has long faced economic struggles and conflict. Barrick Gold CEO Mark Bristow emphasized that this multibillion-dollar project represents a “multi-generational opportunity” to drive economic and social uplift.

Currently, 75% of the workforce involved in the project is from Balochistan, with the majority hailing from District Chagai. Barrick aims to further strengthen local representation by creating more job opportunities and advancing skills development programs.

Additionally, the recently inaugurated Mother and Child Health Center in Humai provides maternal care services, a first for the area.

Bristow envisions Reko Diq as more than a mining initiative. He highlights its potential to foster inclusive growth by involving local communities in its development and implementing health care, education, and training projects.

Slated to begin production by 2028, the Reko Diq project is expected to generate thousands of jobs and significantly boost Pakistan’s export revenues. While Barrick and the government emphasize environmental protections and equitable benefit sharing, advocacy groups are pushing for more transparency and community oversight to ensure the promises reach those who need them most.
