Delays in Balochistan dam projects due to funding issues

The Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives has raised concerns over significant delays in the construction of dams in Balochistan caused by funding challenges and escalating project costs.

During a meeting chaired by Senator Quratulain Marri at the Parliament House on Monday, officials from the Planning Department reported on the status of 23 ongoing dam projects in the province. The committee was informed that:

  • Construction of 18 out of 23 dams has been delayed.
  • Deadlines for the completion of 14 dams have already expired.
  • Work on four additional projects has stalled due to increasing costs.

The total estimated cost of the projects is Rs182.83 billion, of which Rs50.55 billion has been spent. However, financial progress remains stagnant at just 21.7%.

The committee also instructed relevant departments to submit a special incentive plan for promoting tourism in Gwadar. Additionally, it sought details from the provincial government on its efforts to accelerate development in the region.
