Pakistan welcomes the US-brokered peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Pakistan has welcomed a historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, brokered by the United States at the White House under President Donald Trump’s leadership. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement on the social media platform X, called this a major step toward achieving peace, stability, and cooperation in the South Caucasus, a region long affected by conflict and hardship.

The Prime Minister congratulated Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan on this remarkable achievement. He described the agreement as a sign of wisdom and hope for a peaceful future in the area and assured Pakistan’s full support for Azerbaijan during this significant time.

Sharif also praised the United States for its role in facilitating the agreement and acknowledged President Trump’s efforts in bringing Azerbaijan and Armenia together. He expressed optimism about the deal’s potential to open doors for trade, connectivity, and regional partnerships, presenting it as an example for solving other conflicts worldwide.

Signed at the White House on Friday, the agreement will normalize relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, paving the way for closer cooperation. This marks the resolution of years-long tensions, especially over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The area, mainly populated by ethnic Armenians, sought to separate from Azerbaijan in the late 1980s with Armenia’s backing. However, Azerbaijan regained control of the region in 2023, leading many ethnic Armenians to relocate to Armenia.

During the signing ceremony, President Trump emphasized the historical importance of the agreement, noting how the two nations are shifting from years of conflict to friendship and collaboration. The United States has also secured developmental rights for a vital transit corridor in the South Caucasus, expected to boost exports of energy and resources. Additional agreements for broader cooperation in energy, trade, and technology were signed, with more details to be shared soon.

Both President Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan thanked President Trump for his role in making the deal possible and even suggested that he be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This agreement represents a significant diplomatic success for President Trump, further boosting his image as a global mediator. While his administration has recently overseen other peace deals and ceasefires, challenges like the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in Gaza remain, highlighting the ongoing importance of international diplomacy.
