OIC-COMSTECH online skills program launched from Gwadar with Chinese support to train students in AI, data science, and digital skills
OIC-COMSTECH launches an international online skills development program from Gwadar in collaboration with Chinese institutions.

The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (OIC-COMSTECH), in collaboration with UNI International and leading Chinese institutions, has launched a comprehensive online skills development program from Gwadar, aimed at strengthening digital literacy, technical expertise, and human capital among youth across OIC member states.

The initiative focuses on future-oriented disciplines including artificial intelligence, data science, renewable energy, digital entrepreneurship, and public health, aligning skills training with emerging global job markets. The program is designed to bridge critical skill gaps, improve employability, and equip students with tools for sustainable socio-economic growth.

According to OIC-COMSTECH officials, more than 530 students from 15 countries have already enrolled in the first phase, reflecting strong regional interest in cross-border digital learning opportunities.

Expanding Access Through Online Education

Speaking at the launch, OIC-COMSTECH Coordinator General Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary emphasized that online and cross-border learning platforms significantly expand access to high-quality education, particularly for students in underserved and remote regions such as Gwadar. He noted that Chinese partner institutions played a key role in curriculum development, digital infrastructure, and program coordination, ensuring international standards and industry relevance.

China–Pakistan Vocational Education Partnership

The Gwadar-based initiative builds on broader China–Pakistan cooperation in skills and vocational training. In December last year, China and Pakistan signed a major package of cooperation documents to advance vocational education, with a strong focus on integrating industry requirements with skills training.

These agreements were formalized during the Seminar on International Cooperation and Exchange: Integration of Industry and Education in Vocational Education between China and Pakistan, held in Beijing. During the seminar, 21 cooperation documents were signed and five joint cooperation platforms were unveiled.

The platforms cover:

  • Professional standards development

  • Shared international teaching resources

  • Faculty and curriculum development

  • Enterprise-linked training bases

  • Industry–education integration mechanisms

Under the Professional Standards and International Teaching Resource Database track, partners agreed to develop curricula and standards in disciplines such as Culinary Arts & Nutrition, Fashion and Costume Design, Food Inspection and Testing, Supply Chain Operations, Fine Chemical Technology, Modern Agriculture Production, and Information Security Technology Applications.

Pakistani participation includes national and provincial bodies, notably the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), along with provincial technical education and training authorities.

Strategic Importance for Youth and Regional Development

Education experts say initiatives like the OIC-COMSTECH online program are critical for preparing youth in OIC countries for the digital economy, particularly as automation, green technologies, and data-driven industries reshape global labor markets. For Gwadar, the program also highlights the city’s growing role as an education and skills hub, complementing its strategic economic significance.
