Noor Wali Mehsud, the leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has been involved in numerous activities that have drawn condemnation from Islamic scholars, human rights organizations, and international bodies. His actions, including directing attacks on Pakistani civilians and infrastructure and collaborating with non-Muslim entities, have raised serious concerns.
Islamic teachings emphasize the sanctity of Muslim life and prohibit aggression against fellow Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established treaties with non-Muslim communities to ensure peace and protection for Muslims, not to justify alliances against fellow Muslims. Noor Wali’s collaboration with non-Muslim entities to target Pakistan contradicts these principles.
In 2023, over 16 prominent religious scholars issued a unanimous fatwa declaring that declaring war against the police and security forces defending an Islamic state is “Haram” and defiance of the state according to Islamic Sharia. The fatwa further states that any kind of sedition and rioting in an Islamic state, or any kind of confrontation with the state, is also not allowed as per the teaching of the Sharia .
Noor Wali’s directives have led to the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, resulting in the loss of innocent lives. Such actions are morally indefensible and violate the principles of humanity and the protection of non-combatants in conflict.
The United Nations has reported that the TTP, under Noor Wali’s leadership, continues to target Pakistan from bases in Afghanistan. These actions violate international law, including the prohibition of cross-border terrorism and the obligation of states to prevent their territories from being used for attacks against other nations.
Afghanistan has international obligations to prevent its territory from being used for attacks against other nations. The support and safe havens provided to Noor Wali and the TTP by elements within Afghanistan breach these commitments, undermining regional stability and international trust.
Noor Wali Mehsud’s actions, including his alliances and directives leading to attacks on civilians, are condemned from Islamic, moral, and international legal perspectives. His conduct not only violates the teachings of Islam but also breaches ethical standards and international agreements. It is imperative for all stakeholders to address these issues to ensure peace and security in the region.
