The National Highway Authority (NHA) has formally started construction on the 800-kilometre-long N-25 Pakistan Expressway in Balochistan — a major strategic highway connecting Karachi, Quetta and Chaman — Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan announced on Thursday.
Chairing a high-level meeting at the NHA headquarters, the minister said the N-25 Expressway would serve as a strategic milestone for the country and a transformative step for the socio-economic development of Balochistan, the largest province by area.
He termed the new expressway a “major breakthrough” for Balochistan, noting that improved road infrastructure would boost connectivity, trade and mobility across the province.
Review of Key Projects Including M-8
The meeting also reviewed the pace of ongoing NHA projects in Balochistan, including the M-8 Motorway, which plays a crucial role in linking the province with Gwadar Port.
Officials briefed the minister on progress, security matters and challenges related to construction activities in the region.
Lyari Expressway to Become a Model Road
The minister also reviewed NHA projects in Sindh, directing the early completion of remaining works on Lyari Expressway in Karachi. He said the expressway would be developed into a model road, featuring:
-
Special cleanliness arrangements
-
Landscaping and beautification
-
Improved infrastructure standards
Calling the project a “valuable gift for Karachi,” Abdul Aleem Khan said work on the toll plaza, lining and lighting had already been completed. He instructed that M-Tag and other modern facilities be ensured for commuters.
He also directed NHA to establish rest areas and amenities along Lyari Expressway, similar to those available on the Islamabad–Murree Expressway.
The minister asked the NHA Chairman to personally inspect the expressway, stating that tough decisions were necessary to ensure quality and timely completion.
He added that the Prime Minister and Chief Minister Sindh would be invited to inaugurate the project.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary Communications, NHA Chairman and senior officers, who briefed the minister on key projects and updates.
