Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to Balochistan seemed more like a crisis management effort than a long-term strategic intervention. However, his message was clear and firm—there will be no leniency towards terrorists.
To address Balochistan’s deep-seated security and development challenges, an all-parties conference should have been convened, bringing together key figures such as Akhtar Mengal of the Baloch National Party (BNP), Abdul Malik Baloch of the National Party, Nawab Aslam Raisani, and other influential stakeholders. A collective and inclusive approach is necessary to forge sustainable solutions.
It is time for nationalist parties like BNP and the National Party to step up and publicly denounce terrorists who continue to target innocent civilians and security forces. These parties must prioritize national interests over their political calculations. The people of Balochistan need this commitment from their leaders to break the cycle of violence and instability. Political leaders must take ownership of the situation by actively engaging with local communities to reject the ideology and menace of militant groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and others.
Empowering security forces to operate effectively without political interference is critical. Strengthened coordination between provincial and federal agencies will ensure a consistent and proactive response against terrorism. However, security measures alone will not bring lasting peace—comprehensive development is just as crucial.
Implementing a ‘Division Development’ model focusing on essential sectors such as water resources, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities can help address the region’s fundamental needs. This initiative should be overseen by the Pakistan Army for effective implementation, while provincial administrations ensure execution free from political manipulation for a period of at least five to ten years.
Strong political ownership and governance reforms are essential to countering separatist and extremist narratives in Balochistan. A balanced approach that combines security enforcement with genuine socio-economic uplift is the only path to stability. Strengthening law enforcement and ensuring political stability are crucial steps toward long-term reconciliation and development.
The state must promote business-friendly policies in Pashtun areas. It should also provide educational opportunities in these regions. These efforts can engage the youth positively. They can also prevent their recruitment into extremist factions. Public-private partnerships can play a pivotal role. They can help create sustainable economic opportunities. This ensures young people have viable alternatives to militancy.
