In a breakthrough move to tackle Gwadar’s worsening water crisis, officials and community leaders have approved the long-awaited Mirani Dam–Gwadar Pipeline Project and expansion of desalination facilities — a dual plan aimed at both short-term relief and long-term water security.
The decision came during a high-level meeting at the RCD Council Hall chaired by MPA Maulana Hidayatur Rehman, with participation from Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Noor-ul-Haq Baloch, GDA DG Moin-ur-Rehman Khan, and ADC Dr Abdul Shakoor Khan, among others.
According to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the two-phase plan includes:
-
Immediate Relief: Increasing water deliveries from Mirani Dam via tankers under strict provincial oversight.
-
Long-Term Solution: Construction of a dedicated pipeline linking Gwadar directly to Mirani Dam and the expansion of desalination plants.
Gwadar has entered its second consecutive year of minimal rainfall, leaving local reservoirs — including Ankara Kaur and Sawad dams — nearly dry. Despite partial restoration, the Shadi Kaur Dam pipeline has yet to meet demand.
Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has already directed the Gwadar Port Authority to monitor water deliveries from Mirani Dam and ensure transparency in distribution.
MPA Hidayatur Rehman confirmed that a feasibility study for the pipeline is underway and a provincial assembly resolution has been tabled to fast-track construction. Officials described the project as critical to ending Gwadar’s recurring water shortages and ensuring a sustainable supply for the city’s growing population.
