Balochistan: Tribal chief hands over brother’s killer to levies, rejects retribution

In a rare move deviating from tribal tradition, the chief of the Loni tribe in Balochistan’s Duki district handed over his brother’s alleged killer to the Levies force instead of seeking personal retribution.

According to Levies officials, the mutilated body of a young man was discovered in Duki on Friday. The victim was the younger brother of Farooq Khan Loni, the chief of the Loni tribe.

The tribe had captured the alleged killer, and under customary tribal law, he was expected to be punished in the same manner and at the same place as he had committed the murder.

However, at the critical moment, Chief Farooq Khan Loni chose to break with tradition and hand over the suspect to the Levies authorities, setting a powerful example of upholding the rule of law.

Reports indicate that the suspect owed the victim Rs. 4 million. A formal case has been registered against the accused, and legal proceedings are now underway.
