Senior JUI-F leader and veteran politician Hafiz Hussain Ahmed has passed away at the age of 74, his family confirmed late Wednesday night. He had been battling kidney disease and undergoing dialysis in recent years, which led him to step back from active politics.
He will be laid to rest in his native Quetta, with funeral prayers taking place at his madressah.
Born in Quetta in 1951, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed was the son of Maulana Araz Muhammad, a prominent Islamic scholar associated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) under Maulana Mufti Mehmood’s leadership. Following his father’s passing in 1973, Mr. Ahmed began his political career in Balochistan before becoming a prominent figure at the national level.

Throughout his political career, he held significant roles, including deputy parliamentary leader of JUI-F in the National Assembly. He was first elected as an MNA in 1988 on a JUI-F ticket and went on to serve as a senator from 1991 to 1994 and again from 2002 to 2007. Mr. Ahmed also played a key role in the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA).
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Cheif Minister Sarfraz Bugti and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq have expressed their sorrow over his passing, acknowledging his contributions to the political landscape of Pakistan.
