Pakistani celebrities have used social media to condemn a recent honor killing in Balochistan and express solidarity with the victims. The incident took place last month in Dagari, near Quetta, where a couple was executed following orders from a local tribal jirga for allegedly violating honor norms. Public outrage surged after a video showing the couple being dragged from a vehicle and taken to a remote area where they were shot at point-blank range surfaced online.
Actor Hania Aamir shared a powerful statement on Instagram addressing gender issues in Pakistan, saying, “If women were to start killing for honor, no man would remain.” Similarly, Tamkenat Mansoor expressed her frustration by stating, “This society hates women,” echoing the sentiments many shared after the incident.
Actor Nauman Ijaz called the event “deeply disturbing and heart-wrenching” and a “raw betrayal of humanity,” while Ahsan Khan highlighted the lack of tolerance and education as root causes, emphasizing the need for improved educational access. Model Hira Khan offered prayers for the victims and acknowledged societal failure by stating, “We failed you and so many others.” Rapper Talhah Yunus also shared the incident on his Instagram stories, amplifying the call for awareness.
Honor killings remain a pressing issue, with 346 recorded cases in Pakistan from January to November 2024 alone, underscoring the urgent need to address deep-seated societal norms that perpetuate such violence. Amid these developments, the Dera Ghazi Khan district administration has implemented new security measures, including banning nighttime travel into Balochistan to reduce risks. Border crossings are restricted from 5 PM to morning, and passengers must adhere to upgraded security protocols like video documentation, travel in protected convoys, and vehicles equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking. Authorities assured that facilities would be provided to those waiting overnight at checkpoints.
The broader issue of honor crimes continues to spark vital discussions, with more public figures raising awareness and sharing their thoughts as these tragedies unfold.
