The annual Hinglaj Mata festival concluded on Sunday in Balochistan after drawing nearly 300,000 Hindu pilgrims from across Pakistan, reaffirming the country’s message of religious harmony and coexistence.
The three-day religious gathering, held at the historic Hinglaj Mata Temple, began on April 17 in the rugged mountainous terrain of the province. The festival is widely regarded as one of the largest Hindu religious congregations in the region, ranking among the top three after similar events in India and Nepal.
A Symbol of Faith and Unity
This year’s festival witnessed an overwhelming turnout, with officials noting that the large gathering sent a strong message of unity and tolerance. Annually, nearly one million devotees visit the sacred shrine, underlining its spiritual significance.
Thousands of pilgrims undertook long and arduous journeys on foot from various districts of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Sanghar. For many, the journey lasted up to 20 days, reflecting deep religious devotion and commitment.
Extensive Arrangements and Security Measures
The Balochistan government, along with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and district administration, implemented comprehensive arrangements to facilitate the pilgrims.
PDMA distributed ration bags and essential supplies, while Deputy Commissioner Lasbela Humaira Baloch and SSP Najeebullah Pandrani supervised administrative and security operations on-site.
A robust security plan was executed, with personnel from the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, Police, and Levies deployed to ensure the safety of attendees.
Medical and Humanitarian Support
To cater to the needs of pilgrims, several organizations, including the Pakistan Coast Guards, PPHI, and the Lasbela Health Department, established free medical camps.
Specialist and female doctors provided medical check-ups and distributed free medicines to hundreds of visitors throughout the festival.
Meanwhile, the Shri Hinglaj Mata Welfare Mandli ensured continuous provision of food and refreshments through a 24-hour langar (bhandara), offering meals, water, sherbet, and tea to all attendees.
Participation of Leaders and Community Figures
The festival also saw participation from political and social leaders, including Senator Daanesh Kumar, who described the temple as one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism.
Speaking to the media, he said the increased number of pilgrims compared to last year reflects Pakistan’s environment of peace and religious freedom.
He emphasized that the event counters negative perceptions regarding minority rights and highlights the country’s commitment to protecting religious diversity.
Promoting Interfaith Harmony
Officials and organizers agreed that the Hinglaj Mata festival serves as a powerful symbol of interfaith harmony in Pakistan. The peaceful conduct of the event in a remote and challenging terrain demonstrated effective coordination between authorities and community organizations.
The festival concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity, reinforcing the message that people of different faiths can coexist and contribute collectively to national development.
