Parts of Balochistan are currently in the grips of a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring as high as 46°C in some districts, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Key areas impacted this week include:
- Sibi: Recorded the highest temperature at 46°C.
- Turbat & Nokundi: Experiencing highs of 43°C.
- Quetta: The provincial capital reached 35°C.
- Ziarat: A cooler 25°C, offering some relief.
- Chaman, Gwadar & Jiwani: Temperatures stabilized at 35-36°C.
The heatwave is expected to persist over the coming days. However, some areas, particularly Zhob, Musakhel, and Barkhan, may witness dust storms, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorms, providing temporary relief from the extreme heat.
Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious by minimizing sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, staying hydrated, and taking necessary precautions, particularly in regions with limited water supply or cooling infrastructure.
The heatwave is not limited to Balochistan. Sindh is bracing for temperatures to rise as high as 49°C in areas like Nawabshah by Friday. Other notable forecasts include:
- Mohenjo-daro, Dadu, Mithi: Expected highs between 46-48°C.
- Hyderabad: Predicted temperatures of 43-46°C.
- Karachi: Relatively cooler at 34-37°C, though high humidity levels (up to 71%) may increase discomfort.
Coastal regions, such as Thatta, are likely to experience slightly lower temperatures (36-39°C) but with elevated humidity levels.
The PMD has issued warnings about potential health risks due to the extreme heat and advised citizens to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, seek shelter, and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
