ISLAMABAD: Google has opened its first office in Pakistan, marking a significant expansion of the technology giant’s presence as Islamabad seeks to transform the country into a $30 billion annual IT export hub.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Google office in Islamabad on Tuesday in a development that signals a deeper institutional relationship between Pakistan and one of the world’s largest technology companies.

The opening comes as Pakistan places greater emphasis on the digital economy, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, startups and digital skills as potential drivers of economic growth and export earnings.

Google Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy Wilson White said the company’s local presence aligns with Pakistan’s $30 billion IT export ambition. He said Google has invested in Pakistan for more than a decade and that its activities have contributed to more than Rs3.9 trillion in economic activity and over 960,000 jobs.

Why Google’s Pakistan Office Matters

The significance of the development extends beyond the establishment of a physical office. A permanent local presence could allow Google to deepen engagement with Pakistani businesses, technology entrepreneurs and young professionals while expanding training and digital-skills initiatives.

Google also signalled plans to support Pakistan through investment in people, technology infrastructure and local businesses, potentially strengthening the country’s ability to participate in international digital markets.

For Pakistan, the challenge will now be converting this growing technology ecosystem into sustainable exports, higher-skilled employment and greater foreign investment.

The Google office therefore represents more than a corporate expansion. It is a potential step toward positioning Pakistan’s young population and growing technology sector within the global digital economy.
