The Frontier Constabulary (FC) has officially undergone a transformation into the Federal Constabulary, following an ordinance promulgated by President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday. This move enables the federal government to utilize the new Federal Constabulary to maintain law and order and address the evolving security needs of the country.
Previously tasked with maintaining peace in frontier and border areas, the FC’s role has now been expanded in light of changing security dynamics, such as the rising occurrence of emergencies, natural disasters, and civil unrest. With this updated mandate, the Federal Constabulary is now equipped to serve as a nationwide reserve force.
A dedicated division focused on anti-riot management and special protection has been introduced under the Federal Reserve Division. The force will operate under an inspector general with a hierarchy comprising additional inspectors general, deputies, assistants, and other officers of the Police Service of Pakistan. The structure includes a range of units, from divisions to platoons, commanded by officers of various ranks.
The ordinance also consolidates the assets and personnel of the defunct Frontier Constabulary into the newly formed Federal Constabulary. All powers and duties previously held by the Frontier Constabulary are now transferred to the Federal Constabulary, ensuring continuity in operations under the new structure. Additionally, rules, regulations, and orders under the Frontier Constabulary Act of 1915 remain valid as long as they do not conflict with the new ordinance.
This historic reorganization aims to create a more adaptable and responsive force, equipped to address modern security challenges across Pakistan.
