Earthquake jolts several parts of Balochistan

A light earthquake shook Sibi and surrounding areas early Wednesday morning, alarming locals.

The National Seismological Centre in Islamabad reported that the quake hit at 1:37 AM local time. It measured 4.1 on the Richter scale, which puts it in the category of a minor tremor.

The quake’s origin was 35 kilometres below the earth’s surface, and its center was about 124 kilometres northeast of Sibi. While people felt the quake across the area, no one has reported any damage to buildings or injuries to people right away. Locals said they felt a short shake, which made some of them step outside their houses to be safe. Sibi, a town in Pakistan’s Balochistan province often feels the earth shake.

City officials and emergency response groups have asked people living in the area to stay alert and up-to-date on how to get ready for earthquakes. Specialists highlight how crucial it is to build structures that can withstand shaking ground to lower risks in these places.

This time, Sibi has been left intact without major destruction, but the episode sends a strong message for continued monitoring and preparedness in earthquake-prone areas. It is a wake-up call not only for the local people in taking safety measures but also for policymakers in making disaster resilience rise high in the agenda.

This earthquake might have passed with little consequence, but it surely was a jolting reminder of how volatile are the forces inside the earth’s crust in Balochistan.
