The Balochistan government has finalized arrangements to send acid attack survivor Dr Mahnoor Nasir to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States for specialized treatment.

The Government of Balochistan has decided to send acid attack survivor Dr Mahnoor Nasir to the United States for specialized medical treatment at Johns Hopkins Medicine, one of the world’s leading healthcare institutions, following directives issued by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti.

According to government officials, all necessary arrangements have been finalized to facilitate Dr Mahnoor’s transfer to the United States, where she will receive advanced medical care after completing her ongoing treatment in Karachi.

The decision comes after Dr Mahnoor sustained critical injuries in a brutal acid attack inside the Surgical Ward of Civil Sandeman Hospital Quetta last week while performing her professional duties. The incident shocked the medical community and sparked widespread condemnation across Pakistan.

Treatment at Johns Hopkins Medicine

A communication from Johns Hopkins Medicine International confirmed that the hospital’s International Care team has initiated the process of reviewing Dr Mahnoor’s medical case. International Care Coordinator Azizullah Salehi stated that her clinical information would be forwarded to the relevant department for assessment, after which recommendations regarding her treatment plan would be provided.

The development marks a significant step in ensuring that Dr Mahnoor receives world-class medical care and reconstructive treatment following the life-altering attack.

Treatment Continues in Karachi

Balochistan government spokesperson and Chief Minister’s aide Shahid Rind said Dr Mahnoor is currently undergoing treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi, where she has already undergone a successful surgery.

“Her treatment in Karachi will continue for approximately another week. Thereafter, she will be shifted to the United States for further specialized treatment,” Shahid Rind said.

He added that the Chief Minister’s Secretariat has formally issued directives to the relevant authorities to complete all procedures related to her overseas medical treatment.

Government Assures Full Support

The provincial government stated that it is utilizing all available resources to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured doctor.

“The Government of Balochistan stands with Dr Mahnoor at every step and will continue to provide all necessary support in accordance with the principles of humanity, compassion and public service,” the statement said.

Officials confirmed that preparations for her treatment in the United States have been finalized and the government remains committed to supporting her recovery.

Acid Attack Inside Hospital

The attack took place inside the surgical complex of Civil Hospital Quetta, where Dr Mahnoor was targeted by an assailant who threw acid on her while she was on duty. A hospital employee, Abdul Razzaq Tarakai, was also injured while attempting to rescue her during the attack.

In recognition of his bravery, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced a civil award for Tarakai.

Suspect Killed During Police Operation

The prime suspect, identified as Humayun Shah, was later killed in an exchange of fire with police near the Noshki Bus Stop area. According to officials, the suspect opened fire on law enforcement personnel during a district-wide manhunt, prompting retaliatory action.

The attack has raised serious concerns regarding security arrangements inside public healthcare facilities. Officials noted that the hospital’s surgical complex comprises five wards and three operation theatres, each requiring substantial security deployment under standard protocols.

PMA Demands Judicial Inquiry

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Quetta Zone strongly condemned the attack and called for a judicial inquiry to determine how the incident occurred inside a major public hospital.
