Pakistan marks 60th Defence Day with national tributes to 1965 war heroes.

The nation marked the 60th Defence Day today with tributes paid by the country’s top military leadership, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and President Asif Ali Zardari to the soldiers and martyrs of the armed forces. Defence Day is observed annually on September 6 to honor the legacy of the 1965 War, when Indian forces crossed the international border under the cover of darkness to launch an attack on Pakistan. The valiant defense by Pakistani forces thwarted these aggressive designs and is remembered as a symbol of national unity and resilience.

The commemoration began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques across the country, invoking blessings for the nation’s prosperity and the liberation of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Military Leadership Pays Tribute
On behalf of the armed forces, Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Chief Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu expressed deep respect and admiration for the martyrs and their families on this historic occasion.

A statement from the military’s media affairs wing emphasized the significance of September 6, 1965, calling it a day that epitomizes the unshakeable resolve and courage of the Pakistani nation. “On this historic day, our brave soldiers, supported by the entire nation, stood resilient against external aggression, defying an enemy far superior in arms and numbers,” the statement said.

It continued, “The heroic feats of sacrifice from that time continue to inspire future generations, demonstrating that a united nation can never be defeated.” The statement also highlighted the military’s ongoing role in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and supporting its citizens in times of crisis, including in the recent floods, with the Defence Day being observed with “utmost humility” in recognition of the national hardships.

PM Shahbaz Sharif and President Zardari Reaffirm Commitment to National Defence
In separate messages marking the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and confronting external threats.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif recalled the 1965 War and the unmatched valor shown by Pakistan’s armed forces in the face of aggression. He emphasized the nation’s resolve to defend its independence, citing recent military operations such as Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, which demonstrated the armed forces’ professionalism and strategic leadership under General Asim Munir.

“The courage and resilience displayed by our armed forces in the 1965 War and in subsequent operations like Marka-i-Haq is a testament to Pakistan’s will and capability to defend its borders,” the Prime Minister said. He also expressed Pakistan’s continued commitment to peace and international cooperation, while stressing the need to remain vigilant due to ongoing regional provocations.

The Prime Minister also expressed solidarity with the oppressed people of Jammu and Kashmir and condemned Israeli aggression in Palestine, calling on the international community to protect civilians and provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In his message, President Zardari paid tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan’s soldiers and underscored that the spirit of the 1965 War continues to serve as a guiding force for future generations. He also referenced this year’s Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, highlighting that, much like in 1965, the country’s forces demonstrated extraordinary bravery and dedication.
“September 6 is a glorious chapter in Pakistan’s history, and this year’s Defence Day further underscores the sacrifices made by our armed forces in safeguarding our sovereignty,” President Zardari stated.

A Day to Honor the Martyrs
As the nation commemorates the 60th Defence Day, it continues to honor the martyrs, the veterans (ghazis), and their families whose sacrifices ensure the security and integrity of Pakistan. The events of September 6, 1965, will remain an enduring symbol of national unity and the unyielding determination to defend the country against all external threats.
