Balochistan govt named among Top 300 electricity defaulters

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has called for a list of the top 300 defaulters of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and revealed that the Balochistan government is among the defaulters. During a meeting chaired by Junaid Akbar, Khalid Magsi highlighted that the Balochistan government is the largest defaulter. Sher Arbab Ali attributed the challenges in the power sector to governance failures, highlighting issues such as inefficiency, lack of transparency, and inadequate policy implementation as key contributors to the ongoing problems.

The Secretary of the Power Division informed the committee that DISCOs have submitted documents for the recovery of Rs. 162 billion and assured that progress on the recovery process would be monitored. The Chairman of the Committee directed the Auditor General to verify the recovery of Rs. 162 billion by the following day.

The PAC also raised serious concerns about the existing recovery mechanism, leading them to request a monthly progress report from the Power Division. Khawaja Shiraz Mehmood raised concerns about the legal basis for DISCOs’ current recovery procedures, questioning whether these practices were in compliance with established regulations. Additionally, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) demanded detailed reports on any actions or disciplinary measures taken against the officers responsible for irregularities or mismanagement in the recovery process.
