The Counter Terrorism Department Karachi, in a joint intelligence-based operation with a federal civil agency, has arrested two Fitnatul Khwarij terrorists, officials said, recovering two hand grenades from their possession.
According to the CTD spokesperson, the arrested terrorists were identified as Umar Farooq, son of Hassan Gul, and Abdullah, son of Mumtaz Ali.
The suspects had arrived in Karachi from Afghanistan on the instructions of their commander to carry out terrorist activities in the city, according to initial findings shared by the CTD.
Investigators said the two had been assigned specific responsibilities within the network. These included conducting reconnaissance of high-profile police and Rangers locations and personnel and passing the information to their leadership.
The recovery of two hand grenades from the suspects was also reported, which said further investigation was under way to establish their wider network, contacts and intended activities.
The arrests form part of continued intelligence-based operations against terrorists networks seeking to establish or reactivate their presence in Karachi. In recent months, CTD operations in the city have also targeted suspected terrorists networks and individuals accused of planning attacks against security personnel.
The CTD said investigators were continuing to question the arrested suspects and trace other individuals connected with the network.
