Chinese Consul General Yang Yundong briefs media on China’s Two Sessions Friday

China and Pakistan are working closely to progress key infrastructure projects including the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway, according to Chinese Consul General Yang Yundong. These initiatives are part of the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two nations, underpinned by large-scale investments such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which has been referred to as Pakistan’s economic “lifeline.”

At a press briefing held during the ‘Two Sessions for 2025’ at the Chinese Consulate General, Yang highlighted that both nations are prioritizing critical transportation and communication projects. China had agreed last year to assist Pakistan in advancing four major projects, including ML-1, M-6, M-9, and the second phase of KKH, alongside constructing key roads like Kaghan-Naran, Jhal Khand, Babusar Top, and Tunnel till KKH. “Both sides are working very hard to complete these projects,” noted Yang.

The Consul General also pointed to the operational readiness of Gwadar’s new international airport, completed in 2023, as a significant milestone. Enhanced infrastructure around Gwadar Port is expected to facilitate greater trade opportunities as both nations work to encourage more ships to utilize the port.

Yang underscored China’s broader 2024 accomplishments in economic growth, targeting a GDP increase of 5 percent, and its ongoing push to promote the Belt and Road Initiative. These initiatives advance high-quality development and provide global opportunities through Chinese modernization.

On the diplomatic front, Yang emphasized China’s commitment to peaceful development, mutual benefit, and fostering multilateralism. He added that China would continue expanding global partnerships and strengthening cooperation through equitable globalization.

Looking ahead, 2025 holds special significance for China-Pakistan relations. It will mark the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping’s historic visit to Pakistan and precede the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Yang called this an important moment to strengthen collaboration and communication, upgrade the CPEC initiative, and deepen cooperation in various sectors.

The ML-1 railway line, a critical component of CPEC linking Karachi to Peshawar, has seen renewed focus from both nations. The October 2024 reaffirmation of their commitment to ML-1 highlights its strategic importance. However, Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi stated that Pakistan will self-fund the project if it cannot secure international funding partners.

China and Pakistan remain committed to advancing shared modernization goals, enhancing regional stability, and building a brighter future for both nations. These ambitious efforts aim to strengthen their partnership and deepen economic and infrastructure cooperation for mutual benefit.
