Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Sindh province arrested a high-profile militant linked to the banned Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) during an intelligence-based operation in Karachi on Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Amjad alias Gohram, was listed in the CTD’s Red Book, which contains profiles of the most-wanted terrorism suspects.
According to CTD press release, a 30-bore pistol and ammunition were recovered from the suspect during the raid.
A CTD spokesperson said preliminary interrogation revealed that Amjad received militant training in Afghanistan in 2022, where he was trained in the use of sophisticated weapons and the planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Investigators further revealed that the suspect conducted reconnaissance of sensitive installations and vehicles in Karachi’s Maripur area and provided logistical support and information for the attack on the Jaffar Express train.
Authorities also believe he was involved in planning attacks on police officers deployed in the Maripur vicinity.
Police said Amjad is the nephew and close associate of Zafar Baloch alias “Mama,” a key figure of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) who was killed during the Jaffar Express train attack.
Officials added that further investigations are underway to uncover the militant network and possible facilitators linked to the suspect. Authorities believe the arrest could help investigators trace a wider militant network operating in Karachi.
Last year in May, Pakistan Rangers and Sindh Police arrested Darvesh alias Sagar, a resident of Lyari and was arrested along with weapons, ammunition, and even hand grenades.
He was the front man for Hayam Baloch, an active member of Baloch Missing Persons group, he was involved alongside Hayam to facilitate the suicide bombing carried out by Mahal Baloch.
