JCP approves Justice Ijaz Swati as BHC Chief Justice

On Monday, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved the appointment of Justice Ijaz Swati as the permanent Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court (BHC). This decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, where the commission reviewed three candidates for the role under a single agenda item and unanimously endorsed Justice Swati’s promotion.

Subsequently, the Judicial Commission officially conveyed its recommendation to the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister via a formal letter, and sources have verified that the Prime Minister’s Office has been appropriately notified.

Justice Swati’s appointment is now pending final endorsement from the President, in accordance with the constitutional process specified in Article 175A of the Constitution. Justice Ijaz Swati, who has been a senior judge at the BHC, is highly regarded for his legal expertise and judicial demeanor.

His promotion occurs at a crucial moment when the Balochistan High Court is addressing numerous significant constitutional and administrative matters. The BHC has been operating without a permanent chief justice since the former chief justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan was elevated to the Supreme Court.
