Chief Secretary meets Gates Foundation to enhance immunization and vaccination outreach

Balochistan polio eradication efforts received renewed momentum as Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan met with Michael Galloway, Deputy Director for Polio at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to discuss strategies for strengthening the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in the province.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary highlighted the province’s progress in preventing polio outbreaks, noting that no new polio cases have been reported in Balochistan this year. He emphasized integrating routine immunization with polio vaccination campaigns to ensure every child receives essential protection.

Gates Foundation pledges continued support

Michael Galloway praised the provincial leadership for its commitment to polio eradication and assured continued support from the Gates Foundation. He also sought the government’s cooperation for the upcoming Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign, scheduled to begin on November 17.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through its partnership with the Balochistan Health Department, continues to strengthen Pakistan’s EPI program by expanding vaccine coverage and improving health system efficiency.

Progress and challenges in polio campaign

The province recently concluded a seven-day anti-polio drive (October 13–19), targeting 2.66 million children across Balochistan. However, health officials reported that around 3,000 parents refused vaccination, raising concerns about potential virus resurgence.

Despite these challenges, EOC officials confirmed that no new polio cases have surfaced in Balochistan in 2025, indicating steady progress toward eradication.

Health officials commend field teams

Special Secretary Health Shahak Baloch lauded the dedication of field health workers, stating:

“From the deserts of Chagai to the mountains of Zhob, our teams continue to reach every child despite harsh conditions.”

He added that this progress was made possible through the Balochistan government’s proactive health policies and partner organizations’ support.

The polio virus remains active in Lasbela and Chaman districts, where intensified vaccination and monitoring efforts are currently underway.
